Six Natural Remedies For Cough

Coughing is pretty normal; it’s how your system clears irritants like phlegm from your throat. However, sustained coughing is a condition that you should worry about, and allergies, viral or bacterial infections can cause it.

Honey

Honey is one of the oldest remedies for a throat infection. Studies have shown that this remedy is even a more reliable relief for cough compared to a cough suppressant called dextromethorphan.

Lemon juice also helps with congestion. Our recommendation – mix two teaspoons of honey with lemon juice, herbal tea, and warm water. Alternatively, you can eat the honey or put it on a snack.

Probiotics

Probiotics are microorganisms that restore balance to the gastrointestinal flora, the healthy bacteria in the intestines. The entire body feels the effects, and studies have shown that this treatment decreases the risk of upper respiratory infections.

Your health provider is in the best place to prescribe the most suitable probiotic, so consult them first. Fermented foods like kimchi, yogurt, sourdough bread, and kefir are excellent sources.

Some capsules contain these bacteria in generous amounts.

Bromelain

Bromelain is a substance that’s present in pineapple and its stem. It’s an enzyme that suppresses cough and displaces the mucus in the throat. Drinking 3.5 ounces of pineapple juice or eating a slice of it will help you enjoy the benefits of bromelain.

There are also bromelain supplements that you can take to relieve your cough. However, it’s best for children and adults who take blood-thinning medications to consider other options.

Peppermint

Peppermint leaves also offer healing properties. It can be ingested as tea or inhaled by the vapors via steam treatment.

The menthol in peppermint soothes the throat and makes it easier to breathe. You can make your steam treatment by adding six to eight drops of peppermint oil to a cup of boiling water. Then, place a towel over your head and breathe in the steam.

Marshmallow roots

Marshmallow roots are different from the squishy product you roast over a campfire or add to your hot chocolate. The marshmallow plant is effective at treating sore throats and suppressing coughs. This is also because it contains mucilage, a throat-coating substance that mitigates irritation.

You can take marshmallow roots in capsule or tea form, but this treatment is not recommended for children.

Thyme

You can also use thyme to relieve some respiratory disruptions. A study involving people with bronchitis was conducted, and it suggested that the combination of the essence from thyme leaves and ivy mitigated coughing and short-term bronchitis.

Flavonoids reduce inflammation and soothe the throat muscles used for coughing.

Thyme tea may mitigate your cough symptoms. And you can prepare it by adding two teaspoons of crushed thyme to a cup of hot water. Let it sit for ten minutes, strain, and drink.
